Columbia Custom 85.3

  • Draft: 4.8
  • Description: This is a beautiful vessel with great character. She is a 1973 custom-built Columbia cutter-rigged sloop, 28' on deck with a one foot, custom built bowsprit. Her name is Dolphin and we have been her proud owners for over three years; we have sailed her from Key West, Florida to Beaufort, South Carolina and back again, all around the waters of Key West and from Key West to the Rio Dulce, Guatemala. She is an extremely sea-worthy and sturdy vessel who seems much larger than her size. Dolphin was bought from Columbia in 1973 as a bare hull only. A couple, Bob and Trix, designed the interior and cabintop. Thus, she is one of the roomiest and strongest-built 28 footers i have ever encountered. I am six foot one and have an inch of head room between the ribs, the v-berth is large and comfortable and the head is as well. We are rather minimalist and so there aren't many "fancies" aboard--i.e. no holding tank for water, no windlass for your anchor and small winches for your sails. We have reran most the electrical and no longer use AC shore power, but all the connections are still in place and would simply need re-wiring. I love the layout of this boat, and have admonished her with my artistic talents and she is adorned with tigers, gods of the sea, trees, Calvin and Hobbes and fish on the floor. We have personally touched every inch of this boat and there is no question we cannot answer; the decision to sell her is a decision that breaks my heart. Dolphin is a coastal cruiser, and we are looking to cross major oceans in our future. She would be a fantastic boat on which to learn to sail and cruise for ages on the coasts, lakes and rivers. She has taken us very far and has many more journeys yet to make.
