Tall Ship Race Black Sea 2014
May 2014. Races of large training sailboats STI (Sail Training International) were one of the highlights in the history of Running on Waves. Thousands of visitors climbed on board at each port of the regatta, media, television, press conferences, honorable visitors and, of course, the race itself. Dozens of large training sailboats and yachts on emerald dark blue waves of the Black Sea in unison and sailing hectic activity seeking to win!- Incredibly spectacular event. According to the rules of the race “Running on Waves” could not participate in the races, because she's not a training ship. But she was assigned to a honorable mission to be the judges' ship. That means she had to be the last one that leaves the start line, to record the crossing of the starting line and come to the finish first, to record crossings of the finish line by other sailboats. There were judges from STI, media and passengers aboard. There was some sort of the intrigue on Running on Waves, since her captain, Yuri Kushchenko, also a former captain of “Tovarish”, was raising all the sails and was in rush to catch up with the regatta immediately after the passage of the starting line by participants. It was a success! Only the intervention of international judges on board forced the captain to slow down twenty degrees roll and go quieter. However, the captain bragged with a fuel economy at the end of the regatta. He managed to sail under the sails only almost all the time. The biggest intrigue of the race became “Akela”. The sailboat, that doesn’t go faster than 9-10 knots, passed both stages faster, than large Tall Ships, which easily develop up to 18 knots. It seems right to say, that one who make fewer mistakes wins a sailing race. There are two official first places, Akela in class BC and frigate “Nadezhda” in Class A.
Greek Forum
In April 2014 a big tourist event of Labyrinth tour-operator in Greece, Greek Forum, took place. Eight hundred heads of agencies of the Labyrinth and four hundreds of guests and journalists gathered in Athens before the summer season, to get acquainted with tour novelties of the season and just hang out. The first day out of three was dedicated to acquaintance with the Running on Waves. Greek partners kindly provided a new terminal of the Piraeus port for this event, actually aligning it with inauguration of the terminal itself. It was planned to show the ship to representatives of tourism industry at the pier, take 110-120 people on a tour around the ship and sail with VIP only. We sailed, showed the ship at the pier and as much as 320 people instead of 120 got on the tour around the ship by estimation of cruise director. Greek Forum 2014 is the biggest agency event of Russian tour operator abroad so far.
Liturgy of Bishop of Paralimni and Famagusta, Vasily, aboard “Running on Waves” on the high seas
On the last day at the Holy Mount Athos the guest of honor, Bishop of Paralimni and Famagusta, Vasily, climbed aboard. And the next day, on May 20, 2013, near the island of Ikaria he conducted the Divine Liturgy on board. Here's how Archpriest Alexander Smolievsky, presented on the liturgy, commented it: "Survey of this level is usually held upon big religious holidays in the key temples with dozens of priests helping to the bishop. Consecration of ships is the usual practice nowadays. But conducting the liturgy by the bishop on board is a honor that falls on one ship from dozens, if not hundreds." Everybody, presented at the liturgy, noticed unusually beautiful natural glowing during the service. It appeared as shimmering mist in the beginning, and transformed to suddenly erupted mirriada of specular highlights on the surface of the water at the end.
Mission to the Holy Mount Athos
Early May 2013 “Running on Waves” with a special mission left the port of Piraeus and headed to the left finger of Halkidiki, which is the Athos Monastic Republic. The mission was to deliver to the monastery of Vatopedi an icon of St. Orthodox Warior Fyodor Ushakov, written by sketches of Fyodor Konyukhov specifically for Mount Athos. Konyukhov blessed cosmonauts Georgy Grechko and Alexander Alexandrov on handing the Icon to Vatopedi abbot. Mission was accompanied by a few TV channels and journalists from a neatly selected press, just because the limited space aboard. Also, pilgrims had to be transfered to Mount Athos by the sailboat, because one of the main purposes of the Athos brotherhood by the Charter of Mount Athos is the reception of pilgrims. The mission included visits to several Athos monasteries and cells, and the actual transfer of Ushakov’s icon to the Vatopedi abbot. In response, the crew of the ship was awarded with Vsetsaritsa Icon by the Greek monks. The icon took pride of place in the saloon of the ship. The cosmonaut Georgy Grechko was so inspired by the Holy Mount Athos, that he compared this trip to a space flight.
Everest
In May 2012 “Running on Waves” flag was raised at the summit of Mount Everest. Interesting details of this story are following. The flag was raised to the world's highest mountain peak by Andreas Georgiou, the first Cypriot climber, who ascended Everest. Earlier, in September 2011, he was blessed for it by the priest and traveler Fyodor Konyukhov aboard Running on Waves, where they were as the fates decree. By the way on the same day, on May 18, 2012, when the first Cyprian climber, Georgiou Andrea, ascended to Everest, Fyodor Konyukhov climbed there second time in his life as well, and became the world's fourth climber to conquer Mount Everest at the age of 60 years or more. (At that time he was exactly 60). Gheorghiu and Fedor had not met at the top. The difference in ascendance time was about two hours. But even if they had met, would hardly recognize each other in the oxygen masks. But this is an incredible series of coincidences, isn’t it!
Immersion of the underwater cross and grand opening of the monument in honor of the expedition
September 15, 2011 is a significant date in the history of the ship. On this day three bright events happened: grand formal completion of the expedition; the opening of the monument on the bay of Paralimni in honor of the completion of the expedition and in memory of all the dead sailors; an immersion of the cross with commemorative tablets in honor of the completion of the expedition in Russian, English and Greek. The ceremony of the monument opening was attended by Russian Ambassador to Cyprus, Ambassador of Cyprus to the Russian Federation, the mayor of the town of Paralimni, Archbishop, the Bishop of Paralimni and Famagusta and other officials, religious leaders. Russian traveler, Fyodor Konyukhov, installed the two-meter underwater cross from stainless steel on the seabed. At the sea bottom he was spectacularly surrounded by the round dance of divers with glowing plastic crosses in hands from the Cypriot diving association. The underwater cross applied on all nautical maps.
Joint trainings with the Coast Guard of Cyprus
Expedition "Sources of Europe" was completed in October 2011 in Cyprus. Right on the first day upon the arrival to the island Running on Waves got involved in joint trainings with the Coast Guard. Training had been conducted on evacuation of a conditionally injured crew member from the ship by a helicopter. A huge rotorcraft with a precision hovered over the ship, and let down on the deck the rope for a lifeguard then flew in a circle, came back, took the "victim" in the cradle and flew away under the noise of screws and cheers of an enthusiastic audience on board and on shore. This event took place at the beam of the famous crowded Finikoudes promenade in Larnaca. After that even a note was published in the Cypriot Russian newspaper: that Cyprus has everything, even "his own training ship “Running on Waves"”. Never trust journalists!
Scientific expedition "Sources of Europe" (To the origins of Europe)
At the end of August 2011 the barketnina left Bremerhaven and headed out into the Atlantic. On board there were such scientists as atlantologists and underwater paleontologists, journalists from several countries and underwater robots to explore the underwater megaliths, which are cyclopean stone constructions built from 2500 to 5500 years ago not clear by whom, for what purpose and with what technologies. Did the expedition lifted a veil upon the one of the secrets of megaliths? Alas. Secrets remained a mystery, although vast files were added to numerous descriptions of megaliths. During the expedition the barquentine visited all the major European cities along the coasts of the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Dozens of honored guests, mayors and famous scientists visited our barquentine. Especially enjoyable was the visit of a member of the Cousteau’s crew, Daniel Mercier, in France.
First passengers. Bremerhaven, Germany
In July 2011 Running on Waves came from Gdansk, where she was built, to the sailing capital of Europe, the city of Bremerhaven, Germany. Perhaps, it was the same adventurism, as the idea of building this extraordinary ship. Dozens, if not hundreds of sailboats, including Russian “Sedov” and “Kruzenstern” were built here, at the shipyards in Bremerhaven. Literally "in every corner" of this city there is a model sailboat or even a real historical or modern sailing ship stands. Counters outlets sag from a great number of sailing calendars and souvenirs. And local babies instead of the first word "mama" begin to list the elements of spars and rigging. In such a professional environment our “newborn” got a startup. It should be noted, that picky Germans were quite intrigued by the constructive and design perfection of the ship (about one month the barquentine made mini cruises with one overnight stay on the island Helgoland). "Das is automatische" was the most often approvingly sounded phrase at the sight of rising and taking in sails by rollers itself.
Inauguration
The inauguration of the project took place in Gdansk, Poland, where the ship was built. The project was never announced in specialized media or anywhere else until fully completed. Therefore, a representation of the finished vessel was a big intrigue. It happened so, that on the first day upon guests and journalists arrival in evening, they were taken on a tour around Gdansk instead of a port Polunochniy (North), where was vessel. Accustomed to manipulations by commercial companies journalists in buses have already begun to speak maliciously “show’s over”. However, late evening, when they finally arrived to the port and saw the sparkling newly painted barquentine, abutting the night sky with three illuminated masts, their delight was endless. The next day, already in the sunny morning, several hundred guests and journalists gathered around the ship. Under the music of a brass band the silk ribbon on the ladder was cut and guests let out into the air thousands of white balloons with the logo “Running on Waves” and ship’s silhouette simultaneously.
