Catalina Catalina 76.2

  • : knot collision with a container which never occurred. After her circumnavigation, she was donated to the Naval Academy in 1986. In 1991, with three officers and nine midshipmen on board, she struck a coal barge in the Chesapeake and sank; the barge was not damaged. The aluminum racer Yankee Girl fell victim to errant navigation and washed ashore on a rocky Block Island beach in 1976, coming to rest in a foot and a half of water but drawing nine feet. She lay on her side for several months, dragged back and forth across the rocks. When salvaged, her topsides were dramatically deflected and distorted but her hull was never breached and she did not leak. It is the ductility of aluminum which enables it to absorb energy by distorting without breaking. In pointing out that aluminum, for the same weight, is stronger than steel, Dave Gerr, in The Elements of Boat Strength, also states that aluminum, being more ductile than steel is therefore also better able to absorb energy.

Catalina Catalina 76.2 description

  • Includes: New custom fiberglass sailing dingy and all sail rigging for dingy (dyer midget design, custom built to carry a 5hp motor)
  • Introduced in 1980, the Westerly Fulmar was the second design by Ed Dubois for Westerly, the first being the smaller Griffon 26. It was intended as a replacement for the Laurent Giles 31: footers (Westerly Longbow, Berwick, Renown and Pentland), but was a substantially higher performance yacht, so much so that they were used for match racing and race training. The main production run of the standard Fulmar 32 ended in 1992 with over 400 built, but a very few Fulmar 33s were built up to around 1996, these later boats having a modified transom with 'sugarscoop' boarding platform.
  • Reason for Sale: I need a bigger boat. I live aboard this one, but I need more space as I'm going to circumnavigate as soon as possible.
  • Full head room : head and galley. This high end boat draws only 2.5 feet and has a trailer and mast raising gear.
  • Fully loaded: one owner boat in pristine condition for the discriminating yachtsman. Priced about half a new boat.
  • Must see : in water now near Annapolis, Maryland.
  • REMARKS: This boat sails well and is a very accommodating 31 footer with an attractive interior. Its deep keel and taller mast enables it to perform significantly better than the centerboard version. The T shaped cockpit allows for easy access from the helm position. Engine access is from both interior and cockpit sole.
