Custom 72 description- Trance is a custom built design by well-known naval architect Angelo Lavranos, constructed of aluminum (5083: H3 alloy temper). She is a serious, fast offshore cruiser, built for sailing all latitudes. She was professionally and solidly built in Cape Town by the renowned shipyard Jacobs Brothers, up to standards for handling conditions common in the Southern Ocean. She feels strong and tough in pounding waves, yet sails like a lady in light winds. The cockpit is deep and safe with the incredible hard dodger (“doghouse”). The transom opens to a swim platform where the windvane steering system is mounted.

- It simply doesn't get any better than Hallberg Rassy! These yachts afford their owners elegant comfort, stability, speed and the peace of mind that can only come from sailing a true blue: blooded yacht. The workmanship is second to none. This yacht has had exceptional maintenance and is completely ready to circumnavigate now. Her new owner will not have to spend time prepping her for the next adventure. The sail inventory is either virtually new or actually still in the box new! Batteries and safety and nav equipment are all 2014 or newer as is the dingy and outboard.
- She was fully serviced and equipped in 2014: 2015 including new sails and batteries. She is totally ready for circumnavigation and can start right now.
- 4 sails : 1 main 3 jibs, Geneoa, drifter jib. crusing/racing gear/Barrient Winches/ ship to shore radio
- Solar station - 5 solar panels : 550W (2015). 3 fixed panels on the roof of hardtop, 2 panels on bimini (removable)
Custom 72 - : knot collision with a container which never occurred. After her circumnavigation, she was donated to the Naval Academy in 1986. In 1991, with three officers and nine midshipmen on board, she struck a coal barge in the Chesapeake and sank; the barge was not damaged. The aluminum racer Yankee Girl fell victim to errant navigation and washed ashore on a rocky Block Island beach in 1976, coming to rest in a foot and a half of water but drawing nine feet. She lay on her side for several months, dragged back and forth across the rocks. When salvaged, her topsides were dramatically deflected and distorted but her hull was never breached and she did not leak. It is the ductility of aluminum which enables it to absorb energy by distorting without breaking. In pointing out that aluminum, for the same weight, is stronger than steel, Dave Gerr, in The Elements of Boat Strength, also states that aluminum, being more ductile than steel is therefore also better able to absorb energy.

- In 2014, Trance received additional attention in preparation for a two: year cruise to the Caribbean. Things that make life aboard even more comfortable include new upholstery in the saloon, a larger custom built holding tank, new double stainless steel sinks in the galley, a water filtration system, a new stove, and a water heater that supplies both indoor and outdoor showers with hot water. The owners also improved safety on board by installing new electrical wiring and conduits, a propane alarm, new autopilot linear drive unit, new steering sheaves and bearings, new HT anchor chain, an oversized 55lb Rocna anchor, and a MOB alarm. Finally, the rig received a professional inspection and some of the running rigging was replaced, much of it with high performance material (Spectra).
