Hunter 25.5

  • Beam: 9.08
  • Draft: 4.50
  • Description: Anchor yes. Bridle, yes. Depth finder yes, although I took the fuse out and never used it because where I sailed on Lake Michigan always deep enough. Navigation or weather systems, no. Bimini/dodger no. Pop top yes. Compass yes, however it is sun bleached so needs cleaned and fluid changed or replaced. No new holes have ever been cut anywhere into the fiberglass or cabin to accommodate things like speakers or additional equipment. Original gelcoat. Great condition. Never painted to hide imperfections. Solid hull. Zero soft spots. There are two small areas above her water line that should be repaired. Neither are deep, both are minor. One is a round dime shaped spot on her transom, the other is an inch long groove on her port side. Outboard motor is a 2013 Yamaha 8 hp electric start, condition excellent, very dependable, always starts...
  • Equipment: ...All standing and running rigging in good condition. Currently dry docked outdoors at a marina along the Calumet river in Burnham IL so she will need to be dusted off after this past mild winter. Simply put her in the water, motor her down the river to Crowley's Yacht Yard, or north to Jackson Harbor where you can step her mast, and she is ready to sail. Her roller furler line frayed last season so I replaced it new. Her other lines/sheets are a few seasons old but in good condition and have a few seasons left in them. Props to the rigger who chose and outfitted her current sails before I owned her, as they did a top job with size vs. safety in mind. It is difficult to round her up even under full sail in strong Windy City winds. She has a tiller not a captain's wheel, preferred especially if you are a racer (unlike me) because her tiller is extremely sensitive and easy to load/unload. Her tiller gives excellent one-with-the-water feel; and makes this boat fast, maneuverable and extremely fun to sail in any breeze. Electrical system works great. All lights onboard work fine although her bow running light fixture needs to be replaced. I would have replaced it when it broke last season by swapping the old incandescent fixture out and replacing it with a new LED fixture. But that easy job was nearly impossible as tinkering with her bow while on the water was too difficult. To remedy this, for the duration of last season I simply used a portable battery-operated fixture instead. If I were keeping her instead of moving for work and planned to cruise at night, spreader lights would be a nice addition. Her cabin lights are, however, bright enough to illuminate her deck adequately. Her ship to shore radio works fine but needs a new antenna. By far, this Hunter 25.5 is my favorite of the three sailboats I've ever owned (one was a Catalina 25 which had a pop top but she was cruiser wit a swing keel which made her slow. The second was a Catalina 27 which was fast because she had been gutted and rigged for racing the Mackinac, however she was impossible to single-hand and didn't have the pop top feature which is essential for a tall skipper like me). Head is a closed system which is a requirement to pass Chicago Harbors inspection. Head works fine but I never used it, preferring to keep her clean as a whistle and smelling like roses, and because Monroe harbor doesn't have a pump out station but it does have bathrooms and showers. One harbor south of Monroe is Burnham, which has both pump out and fueling stations, as well as bathrooms and showers. The gas stove in her galley has never been used. Although working, I never used her fresh water tank or her fore or aft sinks either, preferring bottled water instead. With regard to the asking price, if you can get broker access to YachtWorld, you can see the prices all the Hunter 25.5s have sold for around the country recently. You will see that they have been selling for between $10k on the high end to $4k on the low end for boats that aren't ready to sail like this one, or need work. Among them few have trailers, and of those that do most are DIY trailers not made to tow a boat like this out of the water and up a ramp like the Shore Landr trailer can. Asking price to $7995. Hope this helps.
