  • Designed by Bob Perry based on a concept by Bob Berg, Toucan is a canoe stern, traditional design cruising yacht. Check out the link "History of the Panda 40" bluewaterboats.org/baba: 40 for some interesting facts about the development of this venerable yacht design. With its 34 foot waterline length, Toucan's theoretical maximum hull speed is an impressive 7.8 knots making her quite fast for a moderate to heavy displacement ocean going vessel. She easily cruises faster than 7 knots on a reach and sails 150 to 175 miles per day with just one or two crew. The Baba, Panda, Tashiba, Tayana, Mason and Nordhaven lines of quality Ta Shing manufactured yachts are well known for their sturdy construction, beautiful detail, comfortable ride and superb handling. Toucan’s hull is graceful and efficient while the living spaces below boast high quality teak joinery. Toucan has been meticulously maintained since her creation in 1985. She will take you to your destination safely, speedily and in great style.
  • Hulls are constructed of a solid fiberglass laminate and are most often trouble: free, with the possible exception of some osmotic blistering below the waterline. Blistering is usually not severe and I have yet to see a case that I felt seriously compromised the safety of the boat.

  • : knot collision with a container which never occurred. After her circumnavigation, she was donated to the Naval Academy in 1986. In 1991, with three officers and nine midshipmen on board, she struck a coal barge in the Chesapeake and sank; the barge was not damaged. The aluminum racer Yankee Girl fell victim to errant navigation and washed ashore on a rocky Block Island beach in 1976, coming to rest in a foot and a half of water but drawing nine feet. She lay on her side for several months, dragged back and forth across the rocks. When salvaged, her topsides were dramatically deflected and distorted but her hull was never breached and she did not leak. It is the ductility of aluminum which enables it to absorb energy by distorting without breaking. In pointing out that aluminum, for the same weight, is stronger than steel, Dave Gerr, in The Elements of Boat Strength, also states that aluminum, being more ductile than steel is therefore also better able to absorb energy.
