Renken Tangerine 54.8

  • Beam: 6
  • Draft: 4
  • Description: Have owned and sailed this boat for ten years - a small but very stable, well-balanced boat. It has a small cabin, but have slept over in it on occasion. A good boat for someone wanting a first boat large enough to accommodate several adults or children; good fun family boat, but simple enough for very easy handling and learning, simple rig. It's very forgiving. These boats were designed by Martin Bludworth for sailing in Gulf of Mexico. Swing keel allows beaching, easy trailering. Trailer is older but solid and serviceable. Mast requires two for raising (or a hoist) but trailer winch makes stepping the mast simple and quick. Very easy to launch, and to rig. Have not raced this boat, but it is very quick even with 90 jib and no spinnaker. Was docked and sailed throughout summer and fall 2013 in Colorado's most challenging and popular high-mountain sailing lake. Will consider any reasonable offer. Am purchasing a slightly larger boat for racing.
  • Equipment: Mercury outboard, also electric motor with new marine battery. Two sails - main and small jib - both are perfectly serviceable but have been with the boat since I've owned it. Bilge pumps, lifejackets, all related gear. New sheet and halyards lines last year. No leaks in hull. Some window calking needed to fix a rain-drip. Needs new hatch latch on one side. No hull damage. Single axel trailer.

  • A raised deck with 7' beam allows a surprisingly roomy cabin. Arrangements below deck are comfortable for an overnight or weekend outing for two adults. There is a large, comfortable V: berth forward with a portable head between; smaller port and starboard quarter berths aft are not large enough for adults. A sink, icebox and small Hibachi charcoal stove with stainless chimney are located on the port side of the cabin; an Origo alcohol stove is to starboard. Storage is excellent with nine bins beneath seats and berths. Wood trim and joiner work below produce an attractive interior.
  • Short Bus has proved to be a very competitive boat in both light and heavy air. We have had great success since re: launching in 2008. We like to say that the Bus likes to punch above its weight class as we perform very well against the 30 footers (J/29, J/30, S2 9.1, Santana 30/30). Short Bus is truly race ready. The only thing I would add would be a new Fries Sail Design 155% genoa.
